Getting Ready, Madeira
This is a photo of several sled pullers in Madeira getting ready to start business. The traditional wicker sledges (carros de cesto) in Madeira began in the early 19th century, sometime around 1850. They were created as a rapid form of downhill public transportation for residents and goods traveling from the village of Monte to the city of Funchal. Today, the 2-kilometer journey is operated by carreiros (drivers) who guide the sleds from the steps of the Nossa Senhora do Monte Church down to Livramento.
