The Basilica da Estrela is located in the Estrela district of western Lisbon. The late 18th century church is a monument to Neoclassicism with its huge dome and fine multi-colored marble interior in hues of pink, yellow and gray.
The Basílica da Estrela, situated on a hill, is a prominent example of 18th-century neoclassical and baroque architecture. Commissioned by Queen Maria I in gratitude for the birth of her son, the basilica was completed in 1790 and is distinguished by its large dome and twin bell towers. The interior features intricate marble inlays and baroque altars, while the main attraction is a remarkable nativity scene crafted by sculptor Joaquim Machado de Castro. The basilica also holds the tomb of Queen Maria I.
