Portugal's Churches: Igreja de Santa Maria, Lagos
Igreja de Santa Maria, Lagos
The Igreja de Santa Maria in the old town of Lagos is one of the most active churches in the town.
The Igreja de Santa Maria was founded in 1498, the year Columbus "discovered" America.
The fine, decorative portal, however, escaped the destruction and dates to 1612.
Relatively plain inside, the church exudes a calm and spiritual atmosphere.
There is a single, rectangular nave with the choir on an upper level to your right as you enter the church. The modern painting behind the altar depicts a battle between angels.
